Other Sites for Government Statistics and Information

Find information on sites around the Internet that offer help in finding data collected by governments around the world.  Included here are links to several government portals that offer a good starting point for researchers.

The Weblinks Collection
  • H-Demog Discussion Network *Offers online discussion and resources related to the history of demographics.
  • Infomine *This is an incredibly extensive meta site put together by the libraries of University of California system. Its government section alone has a remarkable number of links (well over 4000) covering just about any topic for which a government has collected data.
  • Internet Crossroads in Social Science Data *Large, well organized and searchable database of annotated links to hundreds of social science data sites whose categories include data by basic industries, country and economic conditions.
  • Moody's Economy.com *A source of current economic information, forecasts and thoughts, along with historic information on different industries. Updated daily.
  • Munisource.org *Directory and searchable database for locating websites and other information for municipal governments and municipalities around the world. The site is not much to look at but most links still work.
  • Population Reference Bureau *Those REALLY interested in demographics and demographic analysis will find many resources on this site which is a good collection point for US and international information. Best features include access to articles, country profiles and population summaries, QuickFacts section and a simple, though effective, data search area.
  • Strategis *Canadian site that has many strong resources related to international trade including several good facts and statistics pages covering many industries. Also available is an outstanding feature called Trade Data Online that allows users to build country specific market reports and graphs showing imports and exports for Canada and the U.S. that can be examined by product category. Curiously, while the service is free on this site the same information from STAT-USA (see above) requires a fee.
  • University of Michigan Government Documents *Excellent resource that takes a while to navigate because it is so densely packed with information for both US and international governments. For those doing market research a great part of the site is the Statistical Resources on the Web page that contains links to lots of valuable resources though some may only be accessible to university users.
  • WWW Virtual Library Economics *Offers two economic resources, Resources for Economists on the Internet and WWW Resources in Economics, both of which offer links to economic data around the world.
