Major Online Databases and Information Providers
|
The sites listed below are generally considered to be the top providers of access to business information. These sources offer access to a wide variety of business information databases and in a sense offer "one-stop shopping" for researchers. Unfortunately, access to this information often comes at a steep price, though most of these services now offer options for making smaller purchases. |

The Weblinks Collection |
- Alacra *Directed primarily at the corporate and investment researcher, the data sources found in this service are impressive and include access to company and industry profiles, market research reports, business news and much more. While much of what is offered is subscription-based and is expensive, a recent new option called AlacraStore does allow for purchase of individual reports and includes good search feature.
- Dialog *This leading information service provider that offers several database products. While access to most research reports is only via subscription (expensive), Dialog’s special feature called DialogSelect Open Access allows for information purchases via credit card including purchase of smaller sections of some market research reports from a small number of research suppliers. However, the search feature in this Open Access section is not very strong and provides little detail on the report other than title and source.
- Factiva *Provides access to thousands of publications, company information and more from partnership between Reuters and Dow Jones, publisher of the Wall Street Journal. The cost is fairly reasonable for individual users, however, access to commercial market research reports is limited.
- Lexis-Nexis *This top online data source offers a dizzying array of products for business and legal research. For market researchers the power can be found in the nexis.com service which offers access to thousands of business and trade publications and market studies. But, like other major information providers, a subscription is expensive. However, users can purchase materials (though not many market reports) from a "lite" version of the service via the AlaCarte option including purchasing market share information from The Market Share Reporter at a very reasonable fee.
