AT&T offers a full-featured searchable site for locating businesses that includes: finding corporate toll-free telephone numbers, yellow and white pages listings, a reverse lookup where the service displays the person or organization associated with an entered phone number, and links to international phone directories.

CI Resources

The trade group Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals offers a few accessible resources for learning about CI such as answers to basic questions about CI and job information though access to most publications is limited to members.

Economic Research Service

Part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, visitors will find a surprisingly robust site with free access to many reports primarily in the agriculture and food industries.

EDGAR Database

The Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval system is operated by the Securities and Exchange Commission and tracks reports submitted to the SEC by publicly traded companies.

Forbes Lists

Rankings and lists provided by Forbes Magazine including 2000 largest firms, top small companies, top places for business to locate and many more.

Fortune 500 and Other Lists

Fortune Magazine's well known listing can be viewed in several ways include alphabetically, by industry, by various performance measures or using a customized approach. Fortune also makes available other lists including a Global 500 listing.

Fuld Intelligence Dictionary

Offers definitions to over 100 key terms used in the competitive intelligence field. Unfortunately, need to register to access and this could be limited to corporate email accounts.

How to Conduct and Prepare a Competitive Analysis

From the Lowe Foundation, this site offers a well written, check-list type article on how to do competitive analysis.

Inc. 5000

Top 5000 growth companies as ranked by Inc. Magazine.

IndustryWeek 1000

This industry magazine offers a global listing of top manufacturing firms and top 1000 manufacturing firms.  They also offer rankings for top 500 U.S. manufacturers.

IndustryNet

Provides information on over 600,000 mostly B-to-B U.S. manufacturers, wholesaler, and business services. Searchable by product type, company name or brand name. But be aware that coverage is limited with many companies, and especially brand names, not represented here.

Kompass

International company/product database that claims listing and financial information for nearly 3.5 million companies in more than 70 countries. However, to use this effectively searchers will need to access the Advance Search feature, which requires a subscription.

Open Directory Project

The Open Directory Project consists of a loosely knit group of "editors" who volunteer their time to build what has amounted to the largest human-created, freely accessible directory of websites. For business research it holds great value for locating competitors within an industry since searching using a product or industry keyword often produces a list of categories containing the keyword. Clicking on a few categories may produce listings of potential product or service providers.

PMLive - Pharmaceutical Marketing

U.K. magazine site that offers regularly updated articles dealing with pharmaceutical marketing and advertising issues.

Superpages

Provides an easy to use directory for locating businesses including nice feature that allows for searching within a certain distance from any point.

ThomasNet

Better known as Thomas Register, the leading directory of American manufacturers whose green books are found in many libraries, this site allows users to locate company information for hundreds of thousands of companies in over 65,000 categories. While results are somewhat limited, often only the company name and address, the scope of included companies is impressive. Also, Thomas provides information on international suppliers from 26 countries through its Solusource search engine.

Whois

Convenient search form allows for world-wide search of domains names.
