Marketing Resources and Links for Tutorial

Listed below are Internet resources associated with the topics found in this tutorial.
Display #
1 Alacra
Directed primarily at the corporate and investment researcher, the data sources found in this service are impressive and include access to company and industry profiles, market research reports, business news and much more. While much of what is offered is subscription-based and is expensive, a recent new option called AlacraStore does allow for purchase of individual reports and includes good search feature.
2 BizMiner
Provides access to market studies, financial reports, franchise information and other reports that appear to be mostly compiled from data available through government sources.
3 Claritas Marketplace
Most well known for its psychographic database, PRIZM, the company also offers online access to many other consumer and business reports that are useful for targeting consumers and businesses, especially in a geographic manner. Reports can be purchased to meet needs.
4 Consumer Payments Research Industry Reference Guide
The US Federal Reserve Bank of Boston provides an in-depth guide (in PDF format) to companies that undertake research on methods consumers use to make payments. This information could prove useful for market researchers looking for retail consumer data.
5 Datamonitor
Provider of reports covering several major industry groups with most reports being on the expensive side. However, they do occasionally offer free reports though it requires registration.
6 Dialog
This leading information service provider that offers several database products. While access to most research reports is only via subscription (expensive), Dialog’s special feature called DialogSelect Open Access allows for information purchases via credit card including purchase of smaller sections of some market research reports from a small number of research suppliers. However, the search feature in this Open Access section is not very strong and provides little detail on the report other than title and source.
7 eMarketer
This research provider focuses mostly on Internet and technology markets. They are considered research aggregators since they gather statistics presented in research reports produced by other sources and then present their own take on what is happening. Basic abstracts and some stats are free, detailed reports are fee based.
8 Euromonitor
Publishes in both print format and online many reports dealing with market intelligence in numerous industries. These publications include several global market share reports as well as studies of specific product markets. However, all reports are very expensive and most likely only available to the well-funded researcher. To find a report for individual use the best bet is to locate the name of the report at Euromonitor then enter the report's name in an Internet search engine but filter search results to only search nearby universities. In this way users can see if the report is available locally.
9 Factiva
Provides access to thousands of publications, company information and more from partnership between Reuters and Dow Jones, publisher of the Wall Street Journal. The cost is fairly reasonable for individual users, however, access to commercial market research reports is limited.
10 Goliath
This market research report reseller site offers access to fairly expensive industry studies but also has reasonably priced company profiles.
11 HighBeam Research
Provides access to library of hundreds of magazines, newspapers, transcripts and more for a monthly or yearly fee. Fee is reasonable.
12 Hoover's Online
Provides profiles, financial data and other information on thousands of companies. Some information is free, including basic company profiles while more in-depth material requires a subscription. Also, for those researching industry or company history there is an archive of defunct companies that Hoovers once covered but have either been bought out or have closed their doors. Unfortunately, this Business Boneyard feature is not easy to access and only available if the company name is known.
13 Housewares MarketWatch
Quarterly report from industry trade group that provides data on consumer purchases of houseware products based on point-of-sales data for 52 product categories. Nice resource considering it is free!
14 InfoTech Trends
Offers Information Technology marketing research reports culled from reports found in leading technology publications. While latest research is fee-based, they do offer a nice free search of older reports.
15 JupiterDirect
Market research firm, JupiterResearch, allows for purchase of its extensive offering of research reports.
16 KnowX
For a fee this site offers background searches of people and companies by searching mostly government databases such as legal records, real estate records professional license records, telephone numbers and others.
17 Lexis-Nexis
This top online data source offers a dizzying array of products for business and legal research. For market researchers the power can be found in the nexis.com service which offers access to thousands of business and trade publications and market studies. But, like other major information providers, a subscription is expensive. However, users can purchase materials (though not many market reports) from a "lite" version of the service via the AlaCarte option including purchasing market share information from The Market Share Reporter at a very reasonable fee.
18 Market Share Reporter
Published by Thompson Gale Publishing, this publication has been a mainstay in university libraries for years. Essentially it provides summaries, culled from many sources, of market share information for numerous product categories (though some information tends to be dated). The publication is expensive and for individuals is probably best viewed at a library (probably in the reference section). Alternatively, access may be available through Lexis-Nexis Alacarte option.
19 MarketResearch.com
This site acts as a distributor and publisher of marketing research reports. It has alliances with a large number of market research firms and also produces some material through its PackagedFacts research group. Also, they may allow for purchase of smaller sections of a big report by using their “Buy by the Slice” program.
20 Mediamark
Most likely only accessible from a university library and probably only in CD/DVD format, this report provides results of surveys administered to a large sampling of consumers. Results are then packaged in a format that provides insight into consumer decision making, product usage, advertising preferences and more.
